HOW TO DIMENSION CURVED SHAPES IN REVIT

Revit's dimensioning tools won't work on curved shapes such as cylinders, spheres, etc.
¿How to dimension this cupola?
Fortunately there's a very simple solution. Trace Reference Planes in floorplan and elevation as shown in the following image:

Reference planes won't print by default so don't worry about them showing on screen. But remember if you erase the Reference Planes your dimensions will also go away with them.
(With collaboration from Valeria) :)

P.D.: Curiously Steve Stafford at Revit OpED has published a related post for dimensioning concentric arcs. CLICK HERE TO CHECK IT OUT.

  1. Thanks. If you do not want to keep the reference planes and want to permanently "link" the dimension to the object you would just select the dimension after placing and edit the witness grip to hit the object edge. After that you should be able to erase the reference planes keeping the dimensions.

    1. Absolutely right Abigail!!! I've tried it and it works. First when you don't have any reference it its not possible to dimension the curved shape. But once you have a dimension referenced to ANYTHING else, then that existing dimenison's witness grip can be dragged and snapped to the curved shape. Thanks for the tip
